Daring Democracy: Igniting Power, Meaning and Connection for the America We Want
By Frances Moore Lappé and Adam Eichen
Did you know Wicked Good Books, right here in Salem, offers a 20% discount to our First Church book clubber?? Head on over and check out our local book store for First Church book club picks today!
Join us as we gather to read one of the UUA’s Common Reads for 2018.  Americans are distraught as tightly held economic and political power drowns out their voices and values.  Legendary Diet for a Small Planet author Francis Moore Lappé and organizer-scholar Adam Eichen offer a fresh, surprising response to the core crisis.  They begin with an essential truth: It’s not the magnitude of a challenge that crushes the human spirt.  It’s feeling powerless. In this case, fearing that to stand up for democracy is futile.  It’s not!  With riveting stories and little-known evidence, they demystify how we got here and then highlight how Americans are responding.  Americans are uniting across causes and ideologies to create a “canopy of hope,” with local grassroots groups sprouting up all over the country.
The group will meet to discuss a section of the book.  We will have access to multimedia, so participants are invited to share articles, talks and videos that they think are relevant and meaningful.  Note: Everyone is invited to attend, even if you can’t finish the reading.

Resistance Sunday, February 25
Leslie's Retreat Community Reenactment 2.0

Mark the Occasion! Join the Ranks for a fun and informal reenactment of Colonel Leslie's 1775 march to the Salem Bridge, the taunting by the townspeople, and the compromise crossing of the North River. We will all then retreat together to the First Church for some warm refreshment.
10:30am - Service at First Church in Salem featuring  singing group Norumbega Harmony. The service will conclude with the call that “The British are coming!”
11:30 am - Meet at Hamilton Hall - bring your recorders and slide whistles - leave the muskets and bayonets at home. Be ready to walk up to a mile (weather dependent).
11:45 am - Meet at First Church in Salem UU and mingle in the church yard to greet the congregants who will join the crowd in opposition of the British march.
11:50 am - Corner of Federal and North Streets. The theatrical confrontation between Colonel Leslie and Captain Felt will need an angry crowd in the background. All surly colonists invited.
Colonists and British soldiers are then invited back to First Church for warm drinks and refreshment (12pm-1pm).
Hosted by the First Church in Salem UU, Salem Historical Society and Historic Salem Inc.
