What NOT to Bring to the Archives

Those who come to the archives to do research must present proof of identity and prior approval to do research. Next, all researchers must read and sign our procedures form and sign our visitation log.

1. Archival materials will not be consulted without appropriate supervision. No materials will be paged from the archives after 30 minutes before the end of your research appointment.

2. The order of materials within folders will not be changed by researchers under any circumstances. Problems or concerns should be brought to the attention of the Archivist. Folders will be re-examined by the archivist before they are replaced within the collection.

3. Materials will not leave approved research areas unless they are signed out for exhibit or other approved use by the Minister or other authorized member of the Church.

4. Use common sense about bringing substances into the Archives. Pretty much all types of food, solvents, ink, etc. are of limits. The archives will provide notepaper and pencils to researchers. Pencils ONLY. Under no circumstances are notations to be made on manuscript material.

5. Outer clothing and packages should be checked in before entering the reading room. Briefcases and handbags will generally not be allowed in the research room. The Archives reserves the right to inspect bags and notebooks.

6. The Archivist, Minister or other knowledgeable church member will help researchers identify material pertinent to their research topics. Some manuscript collections are available to researchers subject to restrictions. Current records are restricted and care will be taken to protect the privacy of Church Members. Special requests for access to these records must be addressed to the Church Membership through the Standing Committee.

7. Access does not constitute permission to publish. All permissions to quote unpublished material or to reproduce any material found in the Archives must be obtained in writing from the Church Membership through the Standing Committee, see our Application to Publish. It is the researcher's responsibility to be aware of the laws of literary property rights, libel, privacy and copyright.

8. Citations to unpublished material found in the Archives should be made in full. Please consult with the Archivist if you need examples of how to cite materials in the First Church collections. Researchers are asked to donate one copy of any published work based on material found in the Archives.

9. A reasonable amount of copying of material may be requested at fees established by the Archives. See the Policy on Duplication. Requests for duplication of materials will be filled at the discretion of the Archivist and/or other authorized Church Member. Forms will be provided and copies will be made when time is available.
