The First Church in Salem, UU is looking for a new Music Director. Our last Director retired after 38 years. We are a growing and active progressive minded congregation that still likes to use our Hook and Hastings organ in addition to our piano, depending on the service and the season. We are a diverse community of approximately 175 members that is still grounded in the Biblical tradition.
- Organ and piano experience is required.
- 8-10 hours / week with potential for growth.
- Choir rehearsal 3 - 4x /month and choir performances 2x /month.

Music Director for the First Church in Salem, UU
The Music Director (MD) develops, coordinates and implements a diverse music program to support worship in the church. Reporting to the Minister, the MD directs and leads the music program while working with the Music & Worship Committee, and other groups as needed. Responsibilities include organizing and directing the choir, selecting music for worship, managing the Music Program budget, overseeing the maintenance of the organ and pianos and recruiting and managing all outside musicians when they come to perform.
Hours and Schedule:
10 hours per week or three “units” of professional time, with the understanding that additional time is required around the holidays for additional rehearsals and performances. Time off includes 4 Sundays per year plus the entire month of July, when the church is not in session. Vacation time is to be approved by the Minister. Substitutes are the responsibility of the DM and agreed to in advance by the Minister.
Salary Range: $18,000 -$20,000+, depending on experience
o Lead and direct adult choir with performances 2x/month. Lead weekly choir rehearsals scheduled on a weeknight or Saturday morning on the weeks when there is no choir and on Sunday mornings on the weeks there is choir.
o Coordinate and plan music for the weekly Sunday service, including arranging for any soloists and musicians in advance with input from the Minister.
o Provide accompaniment for regular services consisting of a balanced mix of organ (50%) and piano (50%)
o Attend Music & Worship Cmt meetings (approx. once / month) and work collaboratively with the members of the Music Cmt to develop programming. Demonstrate flexibility and openness to develop music programs that respond to the ever evolving interests of the congregation as expressed primarily by the Music Cmt.
o Provide musical accompaniment for children’s programs during a Sunday service including the Christmas Pageant, Youth Sunday, RE Sunday and the Coming of Age service. Work with RE Director to schedule rehearsals and coordinate planning.
o Plan and lead at least one “all-music” Sunday worship program per year, working with the choir and Minister.
o Develop and organize an organ or music recital to engage the First Church and broader community, once per year with potential expansion.
o Negotiable - Lead and direct children choir 3x / year, with ~ 4 rehearsals prior to each performance.
