First Church in Salem, 316 Essex Street, Salem, MA

First Church in Salem continues its “Resistance” Speaker Series on Friday, October 6 with a program featuring former CIA Officer John Kiriakou speaking on “Ethics in the CIA.”

This event is free and open to the public.

Throughout history and particularly today the role of intelligence services in information collection and operational activity has been controversial. This talk explores both personal morality and the rule of law in these functions today.

John Kiriakou has served as a CIA officer, senior investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and as counterterrorism consultant for ABC News. In 2007 he exposed use of the torture of prisoners by the CIA; this was official U.S. Government policy that had been approved by then-President George W. Bush. He was indicted by the Obama administration under the Espionage Act, which was designed to punish spies. He served 23 months in prison as a result of his testimony.

This program continues the First Church in Salem’s “Resistance” Speaker Series. Over the course of this year the congregation plans to continue to host programs dealing with major social and political issues facing the United States.
