  • For the Bible Tells Me So: film & discussion
    ~ 7:00 p.m.

Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
Admission is free.

Discussion to follow movie, facilitated by Reverend Jim Maynard and his husband Jim Singletary.

  • Operation Sewing Bee
    ~ 6:00 p.m.

Religious Education's senior class and the Alliance are coordinating a church-wide effort to make warm hats and mittens to be sent to children in Afghanistan and Iraq starting in October, 2008. We are most fortunate to have four rolls of technologically advanced material donated by Polartec Inc., Lawrence MA. Our first Operation Sewing Bee will take place Wednesday April 30 @ 6:00PM. A light supper will be served. Let's see if we can make enough hats and mittens to finish all one hundred yards of fabric!

We would like to have up to 10 sewing machines and an equal amount of cutters. Please contact Deb DiGiulio at re@firstchurchinsalem.org or 978-210-2060. Sewers, cutters & friends needed!!!!
